Crepuscular began in Latin, where crepusculum meant “twilight”, the dim interval between day and night; its deeper origin is uncertain, though it is linked with creper, “dark” or “obscure”. Latin formed crepuscularis, “of twilight”, and English borrowed the learned adjective in the seventeenth century. It first described twilight itself, then naturally came to name creatures busiest at dawn and dusk.
